Pride Flag Raising, New Britain's First

CMHA staff and clients from 233 Main Street were out in force for New Britain’s first-ever Pride flag raising in Central Park. City officials and community members attended to honor the LGBTQ+ community, as well as recognize this year as the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

Mayor Erin Stewart addressed the crowd, telling how she had actually received emails and calls from residents in opposition to the event. Seeing it as the right thing to do, Mayor Stewart said “The city of New Britain prides itself on supporting all people.” To finish her remarks, she simply stated: “Love Wins.”

New Britain Pride Chairman and event organizer, John Board, said, “We wanted to make New Britain and this community a better place to live and grow."

Also speaking at the event was State Rep. Dr. William Petit. “We need to become the change we want to see in society. Remember to be the change you want to see, and treat others as you would want to be treated.”

Rev. Margret Hofmeister, of the First Church of Christ Congregational on Corbin Avenue, concluded the ceremony with a reading, reminding all: Love is Love.
